CHAPTER twenty-three

The cold was biting, and the clouds had not quite closed in around the city. In the distance along the street, Wyatt saw the familiar mountains that surrounded Salt Lake City.

The others coughed and stumbled nearby, as they all stepped in together.

"How much time do we have?" Aldan asked. "I mean the rest of us get here at 5:00 pm., but how long before you"—he pointed toward Wyatt and Brooke—"start showing up?"

Thirty minutes," Brooke said. "I think that is right."

"Okay," Aldan said, taking charge again. "Same rules as before. If you get into trouble, head back to the time we decided specified and start over. Don't let yourself see yourself this time." He looked at Brooke as he finished.

"Now, you said it was a red sedan that took Jarod," Aldan continued in the leadership role. "Do you have any other ways of determining which car it was?"

"This is the same 2099 that we visited before," Avery said. "And Mr. Janson has the connection band that we used the last time. This is not going to be easy."

"I didn't see the connection band in his office when I searched the last time," Wyatt said as he started walking along the street. A brisk breeze blew as the clouds rolled in tighter. Soon it would be overcast.

"We can't just look for a red car," Avery said. "And evidently we can't go in the front door of the apartment building because some of you have already been there. Is the plan to simply grab Jarod in the parking garage?"

"Yes," Aldan said. "I suggest we find our own red vehicle and steal it."

"Don't be foolish," Brooke said. "We can't steal a car without being noticed. The cars only work for the connection bands that everyone is wearing. We don't have any."

"Maybe we should steal a few of those," Jeremy suggested, turning in the path to follow a young man who walked toward the bus stop.

Wyatt glanced over his shoulder, feeling the tension rising in their group. Aldan walked backward for a moment, then turned around.

"We're making a mess of all of this," Brooke said.

"What would you have us do differently?" Aldan said.

"You've already been here so many times that the Machina may have already noticed you were here," Avery said, stepping closer to Brooke. "I say we see what Jeremy can do."

Wyatt glanced back over his shoulder and felt a little relief at what he saw. Rather than attacking the young man he had followed, it appeared Jeremy was just talking with him. Jeremy gesticulated wildly with his hands and Wyatt wondered what he could be saying. It certainly had to be an elaborate story.

"I think he is going to do it," Aldan said as they neared the corner of the block and began to turn around it.

Aldan waited near the corner watching and giving a play-by-play of the interactions between Jeremy and the young man.

"He stopped talking, but the other man stepped closer," Aldan said. "I think he has convinced him of something.
